Burleson ISD Dedicates Hughes Middle School to Students
BISD Thanks Community for Supporting Student Education
December 18, 2019 – The Burleson ISD Board of Trustees and Superintendent Dr. Bret Jimerson dedicated Pauline G. Hughes Middle School to the students of Burleson ISD on December 18, 2019.
The Hughes Middle School project included interior and exterior renovations in addition to new construction for increased capacity for fine arts and athletics. It is one of four district bond projects voters approved in May 2017 to accommodate the needs of the growing district and was completed within 18 months of breaking ground.
Hughes Middle School students and staff joined community leaders, Facilities Advisory Committee members, and former Hughes Middle School educators and staff at the dedication event.
State Senator Beverly Powell attended and congratulated the school board, Dr. Bret Jimerson, and the facilities advisory committee on the opening of this facility.
“It’s a great time in Burleson that the entire community is willing to support initiatives like this, to bring quality, high caliber, 21st-century education to our students—our future leaders, healthcare providers, and inventors, who will make the decisions that lead our nation into a brighter future,” said Senator Powell.
BISD Superintendent Dr. Bret Jimerson welcomed former educators and students, noting the significant changes to the building since they last visited.
“Every time I am in this building, I am inspired; That is exactly how we want the students and teachers of Hughes to feel each day,” said Dr. Jimerson. “When students and staff enter the building, they enter an innovative space designed to spark creativity and meet the educational needs of today’s learners. I am proud of the transformation Hughes has undergone in 18 months.”
Dr. Jimerson recognized the many groups involved with the project, including the BISD Board of Trustees.
“I can attest to their continuous dedication and passion to do what’s best for our students, employees, and our community,” said Dr. Jimerson. “Our board entrusted the facilities advisory committee to recommend a plan to address student growth and district facility needs, which they adopted in its entirety.”
In thanking the Facilities Advisory Committee, Dr. Jimerson added, “This group of community members spent countless hours working together, representing every aspect of our Burleson community. As a committee, you developed a plan for Hughes that would accommodate student growth while increasing capacity for fine arts and athletics. You developed a vision that secured the community support for this facility, and it will benefit our students for years to come.”
Dr. Jimerson also recognized the BISD project team, Stantec Architecture, Cadence McShane Construction, and the City of Burleson.
School Board President Andy Pickens shared remarks on behalf of trustees.
“Whether you taught or attended Hughes Middle School, this building has been a part of our story for over 50 years,” said Pickens. “As the times have changed, so have the needs of today’s learners. BISD works continuously to offer tailored educational opportunities to students in premier facilities. The improvements made to this building are evidence of this commitment. Hughes Middle School continues to be a part of our story, and we, as a board, thank all of you for your support as we enter its next chapter.”
Hughes Middle School Principal Dena Schimming also recognized students, staff, and the many groups that played a role in bringing this facility to students.
