BISD Celebrates National Principals Month

October is National Principals Month, and we’re celebrating our principals all month by sharing some fun facts about each campus leader.

Kim Kimberling, Brock Elementary
How many years have you served in education? I have served 23 years in public education.
Where are you originally from? Wake Village, Texas
Favorite sports team? Dallas Stars and Baylor Bears
What would be impossible for you to give up? Time with family
Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by? The Golden Rule: "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
What are your favorite smart-phone apps? Twitter, Facebook, Pinterest and Pandora
If you could travel in time, where would you go? I would travel back in time to when my kids were younger. They are growing up too fast.
What was your original college major? Speech Communications
Name one thing that most people don’t know about you. I was the quarterback of my sorority’s intramural football team.
What song do you know all of the lyrics to? I only know the chorus of my favorite songs.
What do you love most about working in public education? My students! I enjoy building positive relationships with all of the students and families.

What is your spirit animal and why? Bluebirds because they are a symbol of joy and happiness and hope for the future
If you could travel in time, where would you go? I wouldn’t travel back or into the future. I like the present.
What was your original college major? Political Science
Name one thing that most people don’t know about you. I’m stumped on this one. I’m pretty much an open book.

What do you love most about working in public education? The hope we can give to students and the care and support we can give to educators.

Ana Ketcham, Taylor Elementary
How many years have you served in education? This is my 25th year in education.
Where are you originally from? I was born in Del Rio, Texas but lived all over the world. My dad was in the Air Force so we moved every three years. I moved to Texas from Virginia where I was able to complete all four years of high school at one school!
Favorite sports team? Horned frogs, of course, and the philly flyers.
What would be impossible for you to give up? Home Depot!! I’m always looking for that next project.
Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by? Laughter is timeless, imagination has no age, and dreams are forever" - Walt Disney
What are your favorite smart-phone apps? 10 10 and Amazon. I do not like shopping so I love being able to click on the amazon ap and get exactly what I need.
What is your spirit animal and why? I am not too sure as to what my spirit animal would be but I want to come back to as a cat. They sleep for 18+ hours a day and still maintain their physical strength and energy. I never stop. I go, go, go. So the thought of sleeping for 18+ hours is quite enticing. :)
If you could travel in time, where would you go? The 50s!!!! Poodle skirts and leather jackets. Sock hops, drive in movies, and soda fountains! Elvis and Buddy Holly.
What was your original college major? Bachelor of Arts in Spanish and sociology.
Name one thing that most people don’t know about you. I have been to the South Pole. Well, almost. Ushuaia, Argentina.
What song do you know all of the lyrics to? Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. But who doesn’t??!!
What do you love most about working in public education? Seeing kids grow in their learning. Watching they grow each year.

Tricia Lyday, Frazier Elementary
How many years have you served in education? 17
Where are you originally from? The Woodlands, TX
Favorite sports team? Texas A&M Aggies- WHOOP!
What would be impossible for you to give up? Mexican food!

What are your favorite smart-phone apps? Ripl- Awesome app to make videos of the amazing things our Frazier Bears do!
What is your spirit animal and why? Eagle- I crave adventure and have a desire to experience everything as I spread my wings fully on every project or endeavor.
If you could travel in time, where would you go? To the future!
What was your original college major? Engineering. I quickly switched majors to Interdisciplinary Studies- Elementary Education at Texas A&M.
Name one thing that most people don’t know about you. I’ve completed 6 full marathons. I love running!

What do you love most about working in public education? Connecting with my students and their amazing families! I love to see students grow and celebrate their successes along the way. It is an incredible blessing to be a part of their journey!

Christy Strayhorn, Norwood Elementary

Name one thing that most people don’t know about you. I will attempt most any DIY project around the house.
What do you love most about working in public education? The opportunity to influence the coming generations. All students, no matter their circumstances, deserve a quality education.

Marla Bennett, Academy of Leadership & Technology at Mound Elementary
How many years have you served in education? 28 years
Where are you originally from? Born in Hampton, Virginia, Lived in Metroplex since I was 4.

What would be impossible for you to give up? Being with my family!

What is your spirit animal and why? I’ll go with owl, because sometimes I just need to sit quietly by myself and observe.
If you could travel in time, where would you go? I would love to see ancient Rome in its heyday. The technology and infrastructure they developed so long ago is still impressive today.

What do you love most about working in public education? I love serving people. Helping our students thrive and supporting their families is why I’m here. I also love serving WITH people. The people we get to serve alongside in this field have such a heart for kids and passion for seeing them succeed. Working in public education is truly an honor and a calling for me.

Lindsey Byrd, Ed.D. - Academy at Nola Dunn
How many years have you served in education? 13 lucky years

If you could travel in time, where would you go? Roaring 1920s-women got to vote and fashion became more of a statement along with seeing their world rapidly changing after WW I.
What was your original college major? Bachelor of Arts in Interdisciplinary Studies
Name one thing that most people don’t know about you. One of my favorite things to do is to go camping and fishing with my family.
What song do you know all of the lyrics to? One of my favorites: This little light of mine by Addison Road and most 80’s country, especially King George, Dolly and Reba.
What do you love most about working in public education?
My favorite thing about public education is the impact we have on those around us (students, parents, teachers). Knowing that we are making a difference for not only our students of today but for our future society is a gift not taken for granted. The many lasting relationships in which people become like family is the highlight of working in public education!

Dena Schimming, Hughes Middle School
How many years have you served in education? When you consider my experience as a pre-K teacher and as a substitute, I have been in education for 16+ years.
Where are you originally from? I am from Arlington. I moved to Mansfield when I was 10. So, I have always been in this area of the metroplex. I love Texas but hate the heat.
Favorite sports team? Da’ Boys (Cowboys of course)!!
What would be impossible for you to give up? Binge watching shows. I couldn’t go back to watching 1 episode at a time on a specific night. We are so spoiled now with Netflix, Hulu, Prime Video, and so many more.
Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by? If it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.
Also, it’s not the mistakes that define you, it’s how you handle those mistakes that define your true character.
What are your favorite smart-phone apps? Waze, PicCollage, Jane, and Bitmoji
What is your spirit animal and why? The Energizer Bunny - I never stop, and it makes people tired when they try to keep up with me. It’s a gift and a curse.
If you could travel in time, where would you go? I would spend a day walking and talking with Jesus.
What was your original college major? English then Business then English then Business then English again.
Name one thing that most people don’t know about you. I am working on my doctorate at Tarleton University. Our campus facility dog Midas is the topic of my dissertation. I am studying the social, behavioral, and academic benefits of having a therapy dog on campus.

What do you love most about working in public education? I love getting to know the kids. They are so fun when you sit down and actually talk to them. They will tell you the craziest things. I have now worked at every age level, and I wouldn’t be able to pick my favorite age. I love them all. I am honored to serve the community in the principal role. It is such an amazing privilege, that I don’t take for granted.

Kalee McMullen, Ed.D. - Kerr Middle School
How many years have you served in education? This is my 11th year in education.
Where are you originally from? Arlington, TX
Favorite sports team? Kerr Cougars! But if I have to pick a professional team, I love baseball and root for the Rangers.
What would be impossible for you to give up? Coffee!
Is there a quote or saying that you live your life by? One kind word can change someone’s entire day!

What is your spirit animal and why? A dog- I am positive, friendly, loyal, and love treats. :)
If you could travel in time, where would you go? I would go back to Israel when Jesus walked the earth.

What do you love most about working in public education? Getting to work with such amazing kids and families on a daily basis! It is so fun watching kids come to Kerr as new 6th graders and leave as new freshman- the transformation is incredible!

If you could travel in time, where would you go? I don’t think I would travel in time (even if it were possible) because my family is here right now so I’m just trying to embrace and savor every moment I have with them.

What do you love most about working in public education? The people that I’ve been fortunate enough to meet and learn with/from throughout my career.

If you could travel in time, where would you go? I wouldn’t want to travel in time, but I LOVE to travel—Hawaii, Italy, Turks and Caicos, Mexico, Dominican Republic—I love the beach!
