Online Learning @ BISD

  • The health and safety of our students is a top concern for us. We know that some of our students will not be able to return to the normal school setting due to personal or family health concerns. Our team is working to shift our curriculum to meet the needs of students at home. While we are very proud of our students, teachers, staff, and families for the work they did this past spring, we know that our distance learning next year will be much more robust.

Online Learning in the fall will be a very different experience compared to how we ended the school year. You can expect that your child will have more teacher interactions as well as spend more time in online learning and completing lessons. The Texas Education Agency shared last week that remote learning requires regular grading guidelines and attendance requirements. As we learned from Commissioner Morath, students will be required to show evidence of their learning daily in order to receive attendance credit. So students will not be able to wait until Friday to complete a week’s worth of work. While we may not know exactly how it will look, we are exploring options for ways students in Online Learning can be involved in fine arts, athletics, and other extra-curricular courses. Based on current information from the Texas Education Agency, a minimum number of minutes of instruction per day will be:

    • 3rd through 5th grade – 180 instructional minutes
    • 6th through 12th grade – 240 instructional minutes
    • PK - 2nd grade - 180 instructional minutes per day

In order to ensure internet access and a technology device, chromebooks will be issued to all Kindergarten through 12th grade students this fall. However, because of the delay in manufacturing, they may not be ready by the first day. If you do not have access to a computer at home and are requesting the online option, please contact the Technology Department at technology@bisdmail.net.

Families who select the online Learning model for their student will commit to remaining in a online instruction setting for the six or nine week grading period.

As we receive more information from the Texas Education Agency, we will be able to provide additional guidance.
