Burleson ISD has entered into a partnership with Cook Children's, JPS, and the University of North Texas Health Science Center (UNTHSC) to participate in Asthma 411.
The Asthma 411 program enhances school asthma services by providing support for prevention-oriented care and equipping school nurses with the necessary training and resources needed to quickly respond to a child in respiratory distress.

Flu Information
You may be aware that the flu is spreading throughout our community and our schools are being impacted as well. Often, we get confused about the symptoms of the flu and how they are different from a common cold. Quick recognition of flu symptoms will help prevent the spread of illness. Please contact your physician if you or your child exhibits any of the following:
Common symptoms of the flu include:
- High fever
- Severe headache
- Muscle and body aches
- Exhaustion
- Dry cough

Common symptoms of a common cold include:
- Stuffy nose
- Sneezing
- Sore throat
- Hacking cough
Children often have additional flu symptoms that are rare in adults, such as nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the best way to prevent your child from getting the flu is to take him/her to get a flu vaccine. In addition, talk to your child about practicing good health habits, such as:
- Washing hands frequently with soap and warm water for at least 20 seconds
- Covering their mouth and nose with a tissue when sneezing or coughing, and disposing of the tissue in a proper trash receptacle
- Avoiding sharing drinks, water bottles or silverware with others.
We encourage you to keep students home if they are showing symptoms of the flu or running a fever. For their own safety and the safety of others, students should not return to school until they have been fever and symptom free for 24 hours without medication. In addition, I ask that you notify the school nurse if your child has the flu. Monitoring flu incidences will help keep students, faculty and our community healthy.

Project ADAM Heart Safe Schools
Burleson ISD is recognized as a Project ADAM Texas Heart Safe School District—1 of only 22 school districts in the state to achieve this designation through the Project ADAM program at Cook Children’s.
As a Heart Safe School District, BISD schools complete training for all staff on sudden cardiac death, including warning signs, recognition, communication procedures, and other staff roles. Campuses also participate in annual cardiac emergency response or AED drills, an important exercise that helps measure preparedness and strengthens a school’s planned and practiced response. BISD will also conduct annual education training.
Each school in BISD has an Emergency Response team and a plan in the event of a Sudden Cardiac Arrest.
Cook Children’s recognized each school in the BISD for achieving Heart Safe School designation in the Project ADAM program at Cook Children’s.
About Project ADAM
Project ADAM (Automated Defibrillators in Adam’s Memory) is a national non-profit program intended to help schools in all communities build CPR-AED or Public Access Defibrillator programs. It began in 1999 after Adam Lemel, a 17-year-old Whitefish Bay, Wisconsin, high school student, collapsed and died while playing basketball. Adam's parents, Patty Lemel-Clanton and Joe Lemel, collaborated with Children's Hospital of Wisconsin to create the program in Adam's memory. Cook Children’s became an affiliate in 2011 and today, Project ADAM has grown to 38 national hospital affiliates in 29 states. Schools nationwide need support to implement CPR-AED programs that save lives, and Project ADAM provides the resources to do so. Project ADAM’s mission is to prevent sudden cardiac death in schools through awareness, education, and training on Sudden Cardiac Arrest and the critical need for a timely response.
