Mr. Holland’s Opus Foundation’s Melody Program provides musical instruments and instrument repairs to existing K-12 school music programs that have no other source of financing to purchase additional musical instruments and materials. Music programs must take place during the regular school day, and schools must have an established instrumental music program (concert band, marching band, jazz band and/or orchestra) that is at least three years old. The NEA Student Achievement Grants are awarded for proposals that seek to improve student academic achievement with emphasis on 21st century skills or critical thinking and problem solving that deepen student knowledge of standards-based subject matter. The Lockheed Martin Corporation provides grants for K–16 math, science and engineering educational initiatives. These programs include the Lockheed Martin Space Day education initiative, MATHCOUNTS, National Engineers Week and employee-mentoring programs, nationally and in local communities. Lockheed Martin dedicates most of its education funding to these activities; on occasion it considers local programs that support these priorities. The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations accept grant proposals for secondary education (grades 9–12) throughout the year. Preference is for innovative professional development programs that partner with higher education and address concerns of secondary education on a national level and can be replicated.
