The Verizon Innovative App Challenge provides an opportunity for middle school and high school students, working with a faculty advisor, to use their STEM knowledge, their ingenuity and their creativity to come up with an original mobile app concept that incorporates STEM and addresses a need or problem in their school or community. The goal of the challenge is to provide an engaging and empowering learning experience to increase student interest and knowledge in STEM and mobile technology. Students and teachers in grades 6–12 are eligible to compete in a national science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) video competition. The Solve for Tomorrow contest is organized in partnership withSamsung, the Adobe Foundation/Adobe Youth Voices and DirecTV, as well as the National PTA. This year’s contest asks participants to submit ideas on how STEM can help improve the environment in their communities. Taking Action in Caring for the Environment

Sponsored by automaker Lexus and children’s publishing company Scholastic, the Lexus Eco Challengeis an educational program and contest designed to inspire and empower US middle school and high school students to learn about the environment and take action to improve it. Teams comprised of five to 10 students and a teacher-advisor are invited to participate in one or both of the two initial challenges, each addressing different environmental elements—land/water and air/climate. No Name-Calling Week, a week of educational and art activities aimed at stopping name-calling and bullying in schools, took place during the week of January 24–28. The Creative Expression Contest is an opportunity for students to submit essays, poetry, music, original artwork or other pieces that convey their experiences and feelings about name-calling and their ideas for putting a stop to verbal bullying in their schools and communities. The State Department Announces “Doors to Diplomacy” 2011 Web Project Competition for Middle School and High School Students The Department of State and the Global SchoolNet Foundation announce the 2011 “Doors to Diplomacy” award competition, recognizing the student-created Global SchoolNet Web projects that best teach others about the importance of international affairs and diplomacy.
