Participate in Authentic Scientific Research
NASA and Arizona State University’s Mars Education Program is offering students nationwide the opportunity to be involved in authentic Mars research by participating in the Mars Student Imaging Project (MSIP). Teams of students in grades 5–12 will work with scientists, mission planners and educators at Arizona State University’s Mars Space Flight Facility to image a site on Mars using the visible wavelength camera onboard the Mars Odyssey spacecraft, which is currently orbiting Mars every two hours. National Science Education Standards–aligned MSIP curriculum has been developed to fit within existing science curriculum using real-world science instead of worksheets or simulations. Student teams can participate in one of three formats for image reception activities: On-site at the Mars Space Flight Facility in Tempe, Arizona; Distance Learning; or Archived Data.

The Civil War is the focus of this section of The Price of Freedom: Americans at War, an online exhibition from the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History. This pivotal and complicated period of American history is divided into sections that allow students to focus on either a specific aspect of the war or the conflict as a whole. The sections included are John Brown, Fort Sumter, the Battle of Bull Run, major turning points, the war at sea, Wilderness to Appomattox, political leaders, military leaders, soldiers in blue and gray, battles and casualties, and Reconstruction and the legacies of the war.

Promote Science Readiness
SID THE SCIENCE KID is a new educational animated television series using comedy to promote exploration, discovery and science readiness among preschoolers. The 40 half-hour episodes, co-produced by The Jim Henson Company and KCET/Los Angeles for PBS KIDS® , debuted on September 1, 2008. The series uses music and humor to celebrate children’s natural curiosity about science in everyday life. The energetic and inquisitive Sid starts each episode with a new question (Why are my shoes shrinking? Why do bananas get mushy?) and embarks on a fun-filled day of finding answers with the help of family and friends. The SID THE SCIENCE KID Web site helps caregivers to build a strong foundation for early science exploration. The site models scientific inquiry in everyday settings: a kitchen, classroom and playground. Complementary online and offline activities motivate children to practice and internalize scientific methodology: Observe! Compare! Contrast! Describe! The Web site is updated each week to present online games, videos, and printable activities tied to the week’s scientific concept.
