Successful Downlink with the International Space Station

Our downlink on June 26th, with the International Space Station was a galactic success. Astronaut Greg Chamitoff entertained the students and audience as he answered 10 of the 20 planned questions. Due to a 9.4 second delay in the video signal reaching us from the International Space Station, it took much longer than hoped to answer each question. Our downlink  was covered by several news media including Channels 4, 8, and 11, radio station KRLD, the Star Telegram, the Burleson Star, the Burleson-Crowley Connection and students from Burleson High School and Hughes Middle School broadcast journalism classes. Using Region XI Education Service Center as the bridge, we broadcast the downlink to students and educators around the world to Honk Kong, Chihuahua, Mexico, New York City and numerous schools in Texas. The service center recorded our broadcast and the video will be available here in a few days, so check back soon.

NASA Expedition Downlink Countdown

On June 26th the place to be is Burleson High School Auditorium. Events begin at 9:30 that day and will include:

  • A live in-flight Q&A with Astronaut Greg Chamitoff
  • Fort Worth Museum of Science & History interactive exhibits
  • Portable Planetarium demonstrations
  • Monnig Meteorite Museum exhibit
  • NASA Moon Rock Display
  • Visit and Q&A with a NASA education expert (open to the public)
  • Enter your name on a microchip to go into space
  • High Powered Telescope demonstrations
  • Student Robotics Displays and Demonstrations
  • Community Poster Signing for Astronaut Greg Chamitoff
  • iPod Give Away

It’s a fun day for students, parents, community members, and space explorers of all ages. Don’t miss out on this once in a lifetime opportunity!

NASA and BISD: The Countdown to Contact Begins

We are at 2 days and counting until the live, in-flight downlink with astronaut Greg Chamitoff aboard the International Space Station. Come join us in the Burleson High School auditorium for a free, public event as 20 of our students interview astronaut Greg Chamitoff as he orbits the Earth aboard the International Space Station. The downlink will occur from 10:50am until 11:15 am.

To celebrate this historical event, for which Burleson ISD was chosen as one of only 5 downlink sites GLOBALLY,  BISD will be hosting a day of science and technology fun for the whole community. From 9:30am until 2:00pm, students, families, community members, and space explorers of all ages can enjoy robotics competitions, meterorite displays from the Monnig Meterorite Museum at TCU, and the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History’s mobile science labs and the portable planetarium all free of charge! Visitors can add their name onto a microchip that will orbit the moon on a special satellite, view and learn about high powered telescopes, watch videos about NASA and the MISSION BISD:ALL SYSTEMS GO summer camp, and wander through educational displays about the International Space Station, Expedition 17, and our astronaut, Greg Chamitoff.

Mission BISD: All Systems Go Summer Science and Technology Camp A Success

The Mission BISD: All Systems Go summer science and technology camp, a week long look at science and technology with a NASA theme, ended in the stars on Friday, June 13, 2008 as students visited the portable planetarium provided by the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History. Throughout the week students also got to experience geocaching, robotics, data probes and hand-held microscopes, student response systems, digital photostories, lab experiments, and much more. Apangea, a sponsor of the camp gifted each student with a summer license to use their math tutorial program, and the 457th Fighter Squadron from Joint Reserve Base Fort Worth sent pilot Lt. Chris Bachelor to meet the students and talk about the science and technology of flight. Students spent the week exploring, learning, and having fun. Several students from camp have been selected, along with non-camp students, to ask questions of NASA astronaut Greg Chamitoff during the live, in-flight downlink with the International Space Station on June 26, 2008 at 10:55am. Response from students, staff, and parents regarding the camp has been very positive and we hope to repeat the event again next year. We would like to formally thank all of our sponsors for their support and donations. And a special thank you goes out to Mr. and Mrs. Lori Rich, Candace Rich, and the team of videographers, photographers, and audio crew from Hughes Middle School for covering the camp events.

2008 Technology Learning Fair

The 2008 annual Technology Learning Fair, part of the 2008 Mission BISD: All Systems Go, is gearing up for a fantastic week of  technology staff development.  Our TLF Program outlines each course being offered.  To register for courses, log in to Eduphoria .

  • $15.00 - 90 minute course
  • $30.00 - 3 hour course
  • $50.00 - 6 hour course

On April 22nd we received an exciting email from NASA that started with these words, “Congratulations! The Teaching From Space Office at the Johnson Space Center would like to officially notify you that your proposal was selected for a live-in-flight education downlink for Expedition 17 on the International Space Station.”
