Burleson ISD Reading Bee

Burleson ISD is proud to announce Walker Crane from Brock Elementary as the 2012 BISD Reading Bee Champion. Each elementary campus in BISD submitted the name of their top reader in the second grade. These students were invited to read three passages for two district judges on October 23rd and 25th. The students were judged on accuracy, fluency, and comprehension. Out of the ten outstanding students that read for the district judges, Walker came out on top. On November 17, 2012 at TCU, Walker will be competing against other second grade students from the metroplex area for the North Texas Reading Bee championship. BISD is very proud of Walker and know he will represent us well. Congratulations Walker!
National Merit Semi-Finalist

Burleson Independent School District recognized Burleson High School senior Ben Simpson at the Board meeting on Monday, October 22nd. Ben is a National Merit Semi-Finalist for the 2013 National Merit Scholarship Program.
To be a National Merit Semi-Finalist, Ben had to meet published program participation requirements and score in the top 1% of students in the state on the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) he took in his junior year. This test has components dealing with critical reading, mathematics, and writing. Of the 1.5 million juniors in nearly 22, 000 U.S. high schools, only 16,000 students meet the criteria to move on to Semi-Finalist. About 90 percent of the Semi-Finalists attain Finalist Standing by meeting high academic standards and other additional program requirements. About half of the Finalists will win a National Merit Scholarship. These Finalists are notified around February.
Ben Simpson is the son of Kerry and Jim Simpson. BISD congratulates Ben for this high academic achievement and extends the recognition to his parents.

West Nile Virus Information
BISD believes that being pro-active in all health related matters is extremely important. For that reason district administrators and Maintenance Dept. staff will walk the grounds of our properties in order to safe guard against any pooling of water that may promote mosquito breeding sites.
BISD is suspending all outdoor activities for younger children, primarily at the elementary school age, until 9:30 am when mosquitos are less active. We encourage our secondary students who engage in extra-curricular activities before and after school to be pro-active with appropriate preventive measures.
While at home, parents and staff are encouraged to follow the State Health Department guidelines that specify the 4D's; Drain standing water, Stay inside Dusk to Dawn when infected mosquitos are most active, Dress in long sleeves and pants when outside, and apply insect repellant that contains DEET.

BISD Recognizes Centennial High School Student, Callie Marshall

Callie Marshall was recognized by the Board of Trustees on June 11, 2012, for her selection to attend the National Federal of the Blind Leadership and Advocacy Program in Washington, DC. Callie, a sophomore at Centennial High School, was one of only 24 students nationally, ages 12-16, accepted for the National Federation of the Blind Leadership and Advocacy Program. She spent April 13-18, 2012, in Washington, D.C. The program provides students with visual impairments a unique opportunity to explore the inner workings of our country’s government, its history, and its culture. In addition to learning about the history of the organized blindness civil rights movement, how resolutions are passed, and how blindness legislation is created, participants become familiar with advocacy work for individuals with visual impairments and available resources for students and adults with visual impairments. Highlights of the program include: visits to historical sites in Washington, D.C., meetings with influential government leaders, and presentations by prominent leaders in the National Federation of the Blind.
Callie is a member of the 2012 National Honor Society and the 2012 Business Professionals of America.
Ten Bells
When Dr. Mark Jackson came to the Burleson ISD as Superintendent in 2002, he brought with him the coveted Bell award. Ten graduating seniors choose one teacher each who has meant the most to them, or who has changed their life in some way throughout their school years. The senior honors this teacher by writing about their experience and how the teacher made a difference in their life. The student then presents the teacher with a Golden School Bell. This Golden School Bell reminds teachers that they truly do make a difference in the lives of children and their families.
Only 10 teachers are recognized by this special award and are honored with a special presentation during the annual Employee Banquet.

Middle School Students recognized through Duke Talent Identification Program

Duke Talent Identification Program's (TIP) 7th Grade Talent Search is the largest program of its kind in the nation. Since its inception in 1980, over 2 million students have participated. The 7th Grade Talent Search identifies academically talented seventh graders based on standardized test scores achieved while attending elementary or middle school. Candidates are invited to take the ACT or the SAT college entrance exam as seventh graders, which allows them greater insight into their academic abilities. Participants also gain valuable benefits and have access to unique resources for gifted students.
Kerr had 6 students qualify for State Recognition and one for Grand Recognition in the Duke TIP program. Hughes had 4 for State Recognition and one for Grand Recognition. The criteria for State Recognition is that the students scored approximately at the 50% national percentile ranking (NPR) for juniors or seniors (traditional testers) of the ACT and SAT. To qualify for Grand Recognition, a student must be at approximately the 90 percent NPR. Those qualifying for State Recognition are honored at a ceremony in Texas. For Grand Recognition, those students are honored at Duke University in a ceremony.

New Vaccination Program Alert!
Recent fiscal reductions to both state and federal budgets and increased federal requirements have necessitated changes in policy to the Texas Vaccines for Children (TVFC) Program. This notification from the Texas Department of State Health Services indicates the following changes for receiving student’s vaccinations effective January 1, 2012:
Children who have private, commercial insurance are no longer eligible for the Texas Vaccine for Children (TVFC) program in local health departments or through the Huguley Mobile Van Service. Under prior policy, no child was denied a vaccine in public health clinics. Under the new policy which is already implemented, privately insured children will be referred back to their physician or medical home for vaccinations.
Children may receive vaccinations from the health departments, the Huguley Mobile Van, Department of State Health Field Offices, or from a Texas Vaccine for Children Program (TVFC) provider if they meet at least one of the following criteria:
-
Ages 0-18 who are Medicaid or CHIP eligible
-
Alaskan or Native American
-
Underinsured=Children with health insurance coverage that does not cover vaccines, only covers specific vaccines, or those that have reached a vaccine cap.
Please ensure that your children are appropriately vaccinated before the beginning of school by contacting your physician, health department or other medical provider as soon as possible! Your physician’s appointment availability could be limited due to this state-wide change and many students needing vaccinations. School requirements for attendance are not changing and students must have the minimum required vaccinations in order to attend school!
Students entering 7th grade will most likely need vaccinations in order to be in compliance. However, many students in all grade levels may need additional vaccinations. A list of required vaccinations by grade is available for viewing on our BISD website at http://www.burlesonisd.net under the parents tab. You may also view your children’s current vaccinations on record through Family Access Click here.
For additional information, please contact your campus nurse or the BISD Director of Nursing and Health Services, Cathy Marsh, at 817.245.1133.
Bad Weather Information - ALL CLEAR
BISD officials state that they are issuing an all clear to each campus at 2:40 p.m. Elementary students may be released at 2:45 pm. Students and staff have been released from Duck and Cover at 2:40. Middle and High school students are returning to class and will be released at their normal dismissal times. Busses will run their normal schedule unless we are advised of changing weather conditions by Emergency Management Officials. We appreciate your patience and understanding during these difficult weather conditions.
