What is SHAC?

The School Health Advisory Council (SHAC) is an advisory group comprised of individuals, parents, and school staff who represent segments of the community. The group acts collectively to provide advice to the BISD on aspects of the school district’s health program.

What do they do?

The SHAC has a variety of roles addressing all components of a comprehensive school health program. The components include:

  • Family and Community involvement
  • Food Service
  • Health instruction (human sexuality)
  • Healthful school environment
  • Health promotion for staff
  • Health services
  • Physical education
  • School counseling

Why do we need a School Health Advisory Council (SHAC)?

It’s Texas law: Title 2, Chapter 28, Section 28.004 of the Texas Education Code.
