BISD is piloting a Satellite Program! NASA’s CubeSat Launch initiative (CSLI) provides students in grade levels 3-12 the opportunity to build a nanosatellite and compete to have it launched into space. Students will design, construct, and test their nanosatellite, applying the same skills that they use in their robotics competitions. This inquiry based learning activity will offer students real-world engineering opportunities and a chance to develop the second CubeSat built by elementary school students to be deployed into space. These students will submit a proposal for launch, in response to a federal government solicitation, in partnership with BISD’s Student Spaceflight Experiments Program Teams, StellarXplorers Teams, the TX-801st AFJROTC, and MIT’s Dept. of Aeronautics and Astronautics, led by Dr. Kerri Cahoy, Ph.D.
Student scientists from multiple grade levels in the district will participate, including students in elementary, middle, and high schools. The satellite will be designed to provide data that will support NASA’s Human Exploration Team in its quest to send humans to deep space manned expeditions. Students propose to measure the effects of radiation on humans in space and to engage in two way communication with their unmanned satellite in space, including communication using pictures and sound.
