Burleson ISD Celebrates Groundbreaking of New Kerr Middle School

BISD Officials Thank Community for Supporting Student Education

Burleson, TX (March 20, 2018) – Local officials and community leaders joined Burleson Independent School District (BISD) today to celebrate the groundbreaking of the new Kerr Middle School. Located at 1320 E. Hidden Creek Parkway, the school will be built as a replacement home campus for Kerr Middle School.

The new Kerr Middle School is one of four of the district’s bond projects approved by voters in May 2017 to manage district growth, which are all in process simultaneously.

“As a 49-year Burleson resident who worked 31 years of those years in BISD, I’ve seen our district’s tremendous growth firsthand,” said School Board Vice President Pat Worrell. “I have served as a Trustee for nearly 10 years, and I couldn’t be more excited to be here today, taking part in the history of Kerr Middle School. Today marks a significant achievement for our students and is a milestone for Burleson ISD.”

Worrell also recognized the Nick Kerr family for their legacy and dedication to education in Burleson. The school is named after A.A. Nick Kerr, a former teacher, coach and administrator who worked 34 years in BISD. Kerr was principal twice at the school, and his three children attended the school as well.

“Many of you know a member of the Kerr family and are familiar with the legacy of their dedication to education in Burleson,” said Worrell. “I am confident they will be proud of this new facility that will carry the Nick Kerr name.”

Members of the Facilities Advisory Committee were recognized by BISD School Board President Andy Pickens.

“The Facilities Advisory Committee was composed of a group of community members who worked together, spending many nights immersed in school finance and district facilities, to lay the blueprint for the work we are beginning here today,” said Pickens. “Thank you, committee members, not only for your time on the committee, but also for your dedication to our students. Your work is an example of the value of education in Burleson.”

Facilities Advisory Committee member and trustee Jennifer Huffman expressed appreciation for the committee’s hard work and the support from the school board.

“It was a privilege to serve on a committee that recognizes the importance of education while meeting the needs of our growing community,” said Huffman. “The board tasked us with creating a plan to address the current and future facility needs of BISD. As a committee, we collaboratively developed a recommendation, which the board adopted in its entirety. As trustee, I can attest to the board’s dedication to uphold the work of our committee. They placed their trust in our work and never wavered. Today is a testament of our community’s dedication to provide our students with a building that meets the needs of a 21st century learner.”

Superintendent Dr. Bret Jimerson noted there are several things going on as the district prepares for the projects that will soon take place in Burleson ISD.

“Our employees are working tirelessly with architects and construction managers on this project to ensure that we prepare this beautiful facility on time and under budget.”

Jimerson also expressed appreciation to trustees and those working on the new Kerr Middle School facility.

“I want to thank our Board of Trustees,” said Jimerson. “It is through their vision and dedication to do what’s best for our students, that helps make this a reality. To each member of the Facilities Advisory Committee, I thank you for your diligent commitment to BISD and for creating an effective plan that addresses capacity at our middle schools and provides much-needed updates for Burleson High School.”

Jimerson also recognized the employees of BISD who work with the architects and construction managers to make this project run smoothly.

“This school will have a lasting impact on our students and community for generations to come,” Jimerson added.

Anticipated completion for Kerr Middle School is slated for Summer 2019. For information and a full timeline of bond projects, visit bonds.burlesonisd.net.
