There is a new law that went into effect this
past summer concerning "foods of minimal nutritional value" at school. The aim
of this new law is to foster a healthier nutritional environment for children at
school. By reducing foods of minimal nutritional value, the USDA hopes to
reverse the increase of "junk food" and carbonated beverages, being consumed by
school children. This consumption is being linked to an alarming rise in
childhood obesity and Type II diabetes.
This law specifically addresses four
categories of treats. Chewing gum, candy, sodas (carbonated beverages), and
Popsicles that aren’t made primarily of fruit juice. We are unable to serve
these "foods" during school hours. This does not include: specified classroom parties or birthday celebration. All other foods are acceptable, such as; cupcakes, brownies, cookies, chips, etc. You are still free to send whatever you choose to send in your
child's lunch, (as long as he/she isn't sharing any of these four targeted items
with others!)
HEALTH ALERT!
Bransom Parents,
We have several students attending Bransom with a potentially life threatening food allergy to peanuts. Children with this allergy can suffer a reaction merely by smelling or touching a food containing peanuts, with the threat increasing if a child ingests it. Strict avoidance is the only way to prevent an allergic reaction
PLEASE DO NOT SEND ANY PEANUTS, PEANUT BUTTER, NUTS, OR FOODS CONTAINING PEANUTS OR NUTS TO SCHOOL AT ANY TIME.
This includes LUNCHES, birthday party treats, holiday party foods, and all snacks sent to school.
NOTE: School prepared lunches are all peanut and nut free.
Our school needs to be a safe and healthy place to learn and grow for all of our children. Please understand that this is a necessary safeguard to protect a child’s life, so we ask that everyone abide by this request at all times. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to call me. Thank you in advance for your kindness and consideration.
Thank you for making sure your child’s
immunizations are current and records are up to date! Click here to read

I am in the process of screening our Pre-k,
kindergarteners, 1, 3, and 5th graders for vision and hearing
impairments. You will receive written notification from me if there are any
concerns.
A second law which passed, requires school
districts to screen children for acanthosis nigricans "A.N." The Burleson ISD
will be screening children in the third, fifth, and seventh grades for A.N. It
appears as a black-brown velvety marker that usually appears on the back of the
neck. This marker is a result of too much insulin in the blood. It is a
pre-diabetic condition and serves as an indicator of risk for Type II diabetes
and other chronic health problems. A.N. is usually seen during the
pre-adolescent and adolescent years. Early detection and attention are important
to reduce the excess insulin in the blood. Treatment usually consists of diet
changes and physical activity since A.N. is also associated with excess weight.
If anything is found as a result of the screening, you will be notified. If you
have any further questions, please feel free to call me.
